Restoration and Repair
We are happy to quote for any repairs or restoration free of charge. Please bring your panel in if possible, and we can give you a costing for any work and show you any alternative options. We are more than happy to visit the project to discuss any restoration and repairs. Sometimes we are able to offer approximate quotes of any project by viewing photographs you may wish to email to us. We can supply a conservation/damage report for architects, church bodies, heritage bodiesand insurers if required.
At Modern Glass we have the unique benefit of a large stock of antique glass in our dusty old stock area. We can often find small antique pieces of glass, sometimes not used for many years, perfect to use in repairs. We can also offer the use of this glass in new creations, though this will be more costly than using new glass. For 60 years our skilled team has completed many repairs, from replacing single cracked pieces, to full restoration projects, including staining/painting new segments to match up to the original design that is more than 100 years old. These are the main activities that we undertake to conserve or restore your glass: -
- Supplying an estimated cost of work upon inspecting the project, either at Modern Glass or at the property. At this stage we may take photographs and take rubbings of the glass.
- Carry out small repairs whilst still glazed if possible.
- Discuss with the client any possible alternatives if exact matches are not available.
- Discuss with the client any safety options such as strengthening bars, or encapsulating in a unit for safety or to meet building regulations.
- Removing the panel from its frame when necessary, temporary glazing if required, and carrying out any work in our workshop.
- Re-leading as required.
- Removal and re-installation of damaged glass.
- Cleaning of the old leaded light if required.
- Any staining/painted pieces required will be carefully matched up as close as possible. New painted pieces can be added to enhance the leaded light even if not originally used.
- New soldered joints where necessary, and re-cementing where needed.
- Encapsulated in unit if required.
- Re-glaze in new or existing frame, on site or at your property.
